Job Summary
Provides pulmonary and diagnostic services to patients as ordered by physicians and/or according to established standards and practices. Serves as a resource for physicians, patients and other hospital personnel. Reports to appropriate Pulmonary Services Team Leader or Shift Leader.
Job Requirements
Minimum Education   Graduate of accredited program in Respiratory Therapy preferred.
Minimum Work Experience Sufficient previous experience as a Respiratory Therapist.
Required Licenses  [Mississippi, United States] Respiratory Therapists 
CRT certification and RRT registration, in addition to current licensure by the Mississippi Department of Health preferred.

Required Skills

Possesses knowledge base and competence required for delivery of pulmonary and diagnostic services (i.e., ABGs, mechanical ventilation, emergency pulmonary services, CPR, etc.) Employee must demonstrate ability to recognize patients' individual needs based on medical conditions, age (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young adults, middle-aged and geriatric), limitations and planned procedures.

Essential Functions

Maintains established department policies, procedures, objectives, quality improvement and control and safety.  Performs CPR; responds to emergency situations.  Sets up, monitors and manages equipment and medications. Administers and modifies pulmonary and diagnostic services as ordered by physician or within established standards or practices. Assesses patient as to progress and communicates findings to appropriate caregivers.  Performs nasotracheal, endotracheal and tracheal suctioning and other airway management procedures.  Sets up thoracentesis equipment and assists physicians during procedures. Completes applicable clinical competencies annually or as outlined by hospital policy.  Conducts appropriate diagnostic tests for patients as ordered by physician.  Participates as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team in the management of patients, information and professional relations within the institution.  


Functional Demands

Prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting while on duty.  Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.  Transferring, repositioning patients.  Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeing, and crouching for patient care functions.  Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required.  Optimal auditory acuity required.  Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments or needles is essential to performing assigned duties.  Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.  Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests.  Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. Maybe subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions need to be taken is essential. Climate control and ambient temperature variances may be experienced. Exposure to limited amounts of hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes are a possibility. Hours of duty maybe irregular or unexpectedly extended due to emergency circumstances.  Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.
