Assists pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Works only under supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Reports to pharmacy supervisor.
Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Meets Mississippi Board of Pharmacy regulatory requirements for pharmacy technicians.
Required Skills: Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified time periods. Ability to work cooperatively with pharmacy staff. Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule. Ability to set priorities and solve problems. Ability to respond quickly to emergency requests. Ability to communicate effectively.
Minimum Work Experience: Previous pharmacy technician experience.
Medication Distribution. Fills physician orders, medication carts, or stock requisitions accurately. Replenishes medications in floor stock areas accurately. Prepares intravenous admixtures or other sterile products accurately. Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately per established schedule. Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations. Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs. Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas. Prepackages bulk medications in unit dose packages. Picks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds. Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately. Generates reports, pick lists, and labels as required. Answers the telephone, identifying self and department. Directs calls to appropriate personnel. Answers requests at the door and makes stat deliveries to patient care areas when requested. Organizes and prioritizes work assignments Ensures pharmacy services are provided in a timely manner. Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately. Files documentation in appropriate locations. Demonstrates good oral and written communication. Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well-organized. Keeps pharmacy equipment clean. Completes and documents all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs. Collects data, conducts quality monitors, and completes documentation as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Maintains compliance with organization’s policies, as well as established practices, protocols, and procedures of the position, department, and applicable professional standards. Complies with organizational and regulatory policies for handling confidential patient information. Demonstrates excellent customer service through his/her attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization. Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and TJC standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies.
