Job Summary

 

Manages and coordinates medical units; directs and supervises functions and activities; interprets policies, procedures, standards and regulations as appropriate. Performs duties in any nursing capacity as needed. Assists in the preparation of annual budget of BHS Nursing Department. Reports to Director of Patient Care Services.

 

Essential Functions- 

Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Prepares work schedules, assigns personnel, evaluates work performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions. Selects, trains/orients department staff (either directly or through delegation).

Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department.

Consults with nursing administration concerning management of assigned units and all related matters. Assists in development of departmental budgets.

Organizes, directs and coordinates functions and activities in assigned units. Evaluates patient outcomes.

Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings, and workshops. Attends meetings as required.

Represents behavioral health services to referral sources, community agencies, social services agencies and others as requested.

Qualifications--

An associate’s degree from an accredited nursing program is required. Current RN license in Mississippi is required. CPR certification is required. At least five to seven years experience as a practicing RN is preferred. Must demonstrate ability to recognize patients’ individual needs based on medical conditions, age (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young adults, middle aged, and geriatric), limitations and planned procedures. Must possess leadership ability, be able to work in multi- disciplinary setting with diplomacy, dependability and confidentiality. This position has been determined to have a high risk of occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens.

 

Working Environment--Works indoors in an office and on multiple patient units. May occasionally be exposed to patient elements such as accidents, illnesses and injuries. May be exposed to infection and contagious diseases and occasionally exposed to unpleasant unit elements. Exposed to hazardous anesthetic agents, body fluids and wastes.

 

Lifting Requirements--Ability to perform the following tasks if necessary:

Ability to participate in physical activity.

Ability to work for extended period of time while standing and being involved in physical activity.

Moderate to heavy lifting may be required.

Ability to do extensive bending, lifting and standing on a regular basis.
