Job Summary
 
Conducts routine tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, and performs related duties following established standards and practices.
 
Job Requirements
 
Minimum EducationGraduate of accredited two year collegiate medical laboratory technician program.
 
Required SkillsMinimum experience of five years as a medical laboratory technician. High degree of accuracy. Skill in operation of laboratory equipment. Troubleshooting skills. Must demonstrate ability to recognize patients' individual needs based on medical conditions, age (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young adults, middle aged, and geriatric) limitations and planned procedures. High degree of accuracy. Skill in operation of laboratory equipment.
 
Required Licenses[Mississippi, United States] Pathologists
Must be certified as a medical laboratory technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)
or equivalent.

Essential Functions
 
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.Maintains required records, reports and statistics as directed.Requests supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times.Participates in educational programs and inservice meetings. Obtains required continuing education.Attends meetings as required. Performs technical functions as assigned. Reports equipment or procedural malfunctions. Performs computer functions as assigned. Performs phlebotomy procedures as assigned. Understands scope of limitations. Requests supervisory assistance when appropriate. Assists in orientation of new employees. Assists in the development of new procedures. Meets all MLT Level I criteria.Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
 
Functional Demands
 
Prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting while on duty.Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.Transferring, repositioning patients.Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeing, and crouching for patient care functions.Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required.Optimal auditory acuity required. Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments or needles is essential to performing assigned duties.Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests.Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. Maybe subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions need to be taken is essential. Climate control and ambient temperature variances may be experienced. Exposure to limited amounts of hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes are a possibility. Hours of duty maybe irregular or unexpectedly extended due to emergency circumstances.Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.
