Surgical Tech Coordinator OR

 
Job Summary
 
The Surgery Services Service Line Coordinator is a clinically competent Surgical Tech who assumes the accountability for the quality of care delivered on specified surgical services under the guidance of the Registered Nurse Coordinator. In this capacity, the team leader gives direct care oversees the care given by other surgical technicians, and unlicensed assistive personnel in the performance of their daily duties while serving in said specialty. The Service Line Coordinator is responsible for securing and maintaining the supplies and equipment necessary for the delivery of care. The Service Line Coordinator should be one who strives to incorporate the philosophy and mission of St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital by consistently exemplifying the values outlines in the mission statement when interacting with others. Reports to the Nurse Manager and/or Director of Surgery Services.
 
Job Requirements

5 years experience, plus certification or pending certification
 
Minimum Education
Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist school.
 
Required Licenses[Mississippi, United States]
Certified Surgical Technologist
Current BLS required.

Essential Functions
 
Ensures that departmental policies and procedures are carried out.Participates in professsional organization and /or performs educational inservices to team members.Assumes responsibility for maintaining current knowledge and competency in specialty.Identify and coordinate the needs of service-specific surgeons through scheduled meetings with each surgeon.Functions on a daily basis as an expert in his/her specialty, in both the scrubbing and coordinating role.Performs direct patient care as indicated by the surgery schedule and staffing level.Takes call with other surgical techs as needed.Acts as a resource person for team members to facilitate problem solving in the operating room.Conducts or coordinates with nurse educator, inservices for all new procedures , equipment, products, and instrumentation.Creates a positive learning environment of new team members.Actively participates in educating and mentoring colleagues and team members to the job or team duties.Utilizes knowledge and skills to facilitate warranted change.Notify Surgery Control Desk when each room on service is at a pre-op point.Monitor and coordinate the turnaround time process through OR staffing utilization with the implementation of teams and Surgical Aides.Facilitates the organized and timely transfer of patient to PACU, ICU, etc.Adjusts staffing levels relative to patient flow and collaborates with the Surgery Control Desk/RN Coordinator to make case assignments based on need and expertise.Makes necessary changes to resource maps for specialty services.Initiates action to manage staff conflicts and assists other staff as necessary in managing conflicts.Seeks assistance from the Nurse Manager when unable to fully resolve conflicts with personnel.Supports cost containment efforts of the hospital through conservation of supplies and care of capital equipment.Submits capital equipment needs to Director of Surgery Services.
 
Working closely with the business manager to ensure supplies are available, and PAR levels are adequate for the needs of the surgical procedures.
 
Nonessential Functions

Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. Maybe subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions need to be taken is essential. Climate control and ambient temperature variances may be experienced. Exposure to limited amounts of hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes are a possibility. Hours of duty maybe irregular or unexpectedly extended due to emergency circumstances.
 
Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required.
 
Optimal auditory acuity required.
 
Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments or needles is essential to performing assigned duties.
 
Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.
