Job Summary
 
The Director of Patient Access is responsible for providing leadership and overseeing key operational and financial decisions pertaining to the management of Hospital patient access operations. The position is responsible for developing and managing functions of Scheduling, Pre-registration, Insurance Authorization, Verification of insurance benefits, Collections of patient payment obligations and associated vendor performance management. Responsible for planning, leading, and directing the administrative and technical aspects of Patient Access across St. Dominic. The position is responsible for blending Ambulatory and Hospital functions to create efficiency and a positive patient experience. The Director develops and tracks performance metrics, executes the strategic priorities and leads continual improvement of patient access revenue cycle operations.
 
The Director of Patient Access will establish strong relationships across the organization, maintain visibility and fostering a culture focused on quality, operational improvement and accountability.  This position will work closely with St. Dominic Leadership to collaborate on advancing strategic direction and efficiency.  This position will represent St. Dominic in matters related to the operational performance of the patient access division.
 
Essential Functions
 
Oversee cross functional team of department leaders for ongoing revenue cycle improvement and mitigating the risk of revenue leakage.
Develop and manage all functions of Scheduling, Pre-registration, Insurance Authorization, Verification of insurance benefits, Financial Counseling, Collections of patient payment obligations and associated vendor performance management.
Oversee new systems, products, and business implementations for Patient Access. Assess organizational strengths and weaknesses to recommend enhanced operational model.
Lead standardizing, creating and sustaining a common culture and high performing operation aligned with St. Dominic priorities and serving the needs of our patients.
Evaluate performance of direct reports and teams. Make recommendations for personnel actions and motivate employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
Develop procedures and policies for the operation of department, process and team members.
Develop department budgets for staffing, operations, and capital resources. Manage actual costs to budget and proactively address any unfavorable budget variances.
Develop and design processes with input of process stakeholders for efficient and timely delivery of patient access services. Promote process orientation and teamwork across structural (disciplinary/departmental) boundaries.
Interprets and oversees the implementation of complex rules and regulations governing insurance, appeal activities, trends, etc. and will make recommendations
Anticipate and predict internal and external changes, trends and influences in order to effectively allocate resources and implement appropriate business initiatives.
Provides leadership and supervision for each manager/supervisor to implement and monitor results from established strategic goals and action plans.
Actively monitors operational performance to anticipate and meet the needs of leadership. Maintains revenue cycle KPI’s within established industry and/or St. Dominic’s standards and instills accountability and ownership at the appropriate level.
Responsible for increasing patient cash collections year over year.
Responsible for meeting or exceeding all metrics relative to Pre-Service Collections and Point of Service Collections.
Responsible for front end denials prevention.
 
Qualifications
 
Bachelor’s degree in business, Healthcare Administration or other similar field required.
10 years of related experience in the revenue cycle or finance.
7 years of management experience required.
HFMA, MGMA or AHIMA certification preferred
Excellent computer skills with intermediate or better use of Excel and other reporting/analytical tools.  
Cerner experience preferred.
