JOB SUMMARY
 
Directs, supervises, plans for, and develops nursing care for the organization/administration for the behavioral health units. Reports to Administrative Director for Behavioral Health Services.
 
JOB REQUIREMENTS
 
Minimum Education Must have current RN license in Mississippi. Must have a master's degree in psychiatric or mental health nursing or its equivalent from an accredited state nursing program or be qualified by education.
 
Minimum Work Experience At least five (5) years management experience in the care of the mentally ill in an acute care setting.
 
Required Licenses [Mississippi, United States] Registered Nurses 
Current licensure in Mississippi required.
 
Required Skills Must demonstrate ability to recognize patients' individual needs based on medical conditions, age (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young adults, middle aged, and geriatric), limitations and planned procedures. Must possess leadership ability, and be able to work in multidisciplinary setting with diplomacy, dependability and confidentiality. Good oral and written communication skills is necessary. The successful candidate must possess sound decision making skills with creativity, initiative and integrity.

Demonstrates excellent customer service through his/her attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization. Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and TJC standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
Develops standards of performance, evaluates performance, and initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Develops department goals and objectives, and establishes and implements policies and procedures for department operation. Develops and recommends department operating and capital budgets to the Administrative Director of Behavioral Health Services and ensures that department operates within budget. Directs the preparation and maintenance of department reports. Prepares periodic reports for Administration, as required. Collaborates with ancillary clinical departments to facilitate treatment of the BHS patient. Assists with planning and implementation of education and training experience for staff and students. Acts as a resource person to patients and staff for resolution of problems related to patient care, not settled at first-line management level. Represents behavioral health services to referral sources, community agencies, social service agencies, and others as requested. Assesses and evaluates divisional nursing services rendered to improve quality of care and obtain maximum utilization of staff and maximum patient outcomes. Serves as the liaison among medical staff, staff, and administration promoting open communication and harmonious relationships. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. Participates in hospital committee meetings as required. Attends and serves on professional/ civic service organizations as hospital representative as directed. Provides and maintains effective communication with medical staff, the community and all levels of supervised staff. Assists attending physicians and aids patients and families as needed in times of stress or crisis. Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records. Maintains all required reports, records and statistics, etc. Adjusts staffing to meet needs and to provide adequate coverage of unit. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings, and workshops. Attends meetings as required. Provides regulatory oversite to Behavioral Health with respect to Centers of Medicare and Medicaid and JCAHO standards as they relate to patient care.
 
FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS
 
Prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting while on duty.Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 10-15 pounds with or without assistance. Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required. Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast paced environment. Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests. Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. Maybe subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions need to be taken is essential. Climate control an ambient temperature variances may be experienced. Exposure to limited amounts of hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes are a possibility. Hours of duty may be irregular or unexpectedly extended due to emergency circumstances. Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.
