Provides spiritual support to patients, physicians, staff, and family members as identified in the "Ethical and Religious Guidelines for Catholic Health Care" and consistent with the standards of the profession. Offers religious and spiritual guidance in a manner which will ensure that appropriate spirituality in the workplace is articulated, reverenced and exemplified. 
Minimum Education
Graduate Degree in an acceptable related field (e.g., psychology, nursing and or sociology). Certification in Clinical Pastoral Education.
Minimum Work Experience
Three years of satisfactory pastoral experience in parish ministry, as noted in parish priest or designee referral letter. 
Active involvement in a professional organization/religious community related to pastoral ministry. 
Application of the hospital healing mission as addressed in the "Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services." (5th ed, USCCB). 
Religious sister, brother, or lay person endorsed by the proper ecclesiastical authority or recognized religious body.
Required Skills
Good physical and emotional health.  Special desire and ability to work with the sick, the dying and their families.  Ability to relate well with patients and their families; and to work cooperatively with physicians, hospital personnel, clergy of other denominations and guests of the hospital.  Ability to meet people where they are in their faith journey.   Acknowledges and respects the sacredness of each person and the diversity of spirituality.  Able to organize worship services in creative and ecumenical ways.   Works well as part of the team ministry and has good communication skills. 
Demonstrates an attitude of teamwork, cooperation and mutual support both within pastoral care and with other departments and /or individuals within the organization. Demonstrates ability to recognize patients' individual needs based on medical conditions, age, limitations and planned procedures.  Both accepts and offers constructive improvement suggestions in a positive manner. 
Responds to routine assignments and emergency situations in a timely manner. Sets priorities accordingly.  Respects patient rights, especially in regard to patient privacy, confidentiality and the right to choose or refuse pastoral/religious intervention.  Understands and respects the limits of his/her particular training in the areas of spiritual guidance and makes appropriate referrals.
Essential Functions
Supports the Christian Mission and Philosophy of the organization and the goals of the pastoral care department. Adheres to established departmental and hospital policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.  Collaborates with members of the hospital care team in identifying and resolving problems. Assists with religious services and/or chapel functions as needed. Visits patients in assigned areas, and others as needed, providing spiritual support and guidance. Cooperates with the health care team in assisting patients to make personal adjustments.  Evaluates patient needs for spiritual guidance and counseling when asked, and may recommend individual programs and services to meet those needs.  Actively participates in the pastoral prayer ministry. Provides special consolation and assistance to families during times of critical illness and death of their loved ones. Responds to emergency calls - i.e. Code 99.  Attends department meetings and other pertinent hospital meetings.  Participates on special projects as requested.  Demonstrates a high degree of sensitivity to issues and persons, with a healthy and holistic approach to life and health care ministry.  Through professional training and/or certification, assists patients to understand more fully life's events as they relate to their spiritual and emotional well-being.  Maintains professional/theological growth and development through participation in educational programs, inservice meetings and workshops. Nurtures spiritual growth and development through prayer, retreats, and involvement in a Faith community. Completes required documentation, including the medical record, in a timely manner. Volunteers in hospital sponsored or community outreach.  Handles potential or real problems in a mature, appropriate manner using the appropriate chain of command.  Communicates appropriately and effectively with the department director.
Functional Demands
Prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting while on duty.  Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 10-15 pounds with or without assistance.  Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required.  Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast paced environment.  Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests.  Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. Maybe subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions need to be taken is essential. Climate control an ambient temperature variances may be experienced. Exposure to limited amounts of hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes are a possibility. Hours of duty may be irregular or unexpectedly extended due to emergency circumstances.  Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.
