Job Summary

Provides spiritual counseling and guidance to patients, families, and staff and performs or arranges for religious services to meet patients' needs.


Essential Functions:

Select and offer morning prayer as well as half hour morning devotions twice a week.

Visits with patients on all units. Spend time with those requesting time or those with special spiritual needs. Take referrals from unit staff. Bring communion to Catholic patients when requested and deemed appropriate.

Conduct prayer services monthly and seasonally. Individuals or departments may request a special session. Attend wakes and/or funerals of patients, families and staff.

Completes medical chart documentation as indicated.

Maintain clothes closet with aid of volunteers. Distribute with the help of staff.

Oversee Prayer Room. Place appropriate literature in the Prayer Room and front lobby. Distribute Bibles when requested.

Maintain bulletin board in order to communicate efficiently deaths, sickness and congratulations of staff and patients.

Supports and interprets hospital’s Christian mission, philosophy and objective.

Maintains confidentiality of patients and other pertinent information.



Courses/training in psychology, nursing and sociology, with bachelor’s degree preferred. Prefer at least one year of previous experience in parish or pastoral ministry, and ordination by recognized religious body and endorsement by the proper ecclesiastical authority. Must demonstrate ability to recognize patients’ individual needs based on medical conditions, age (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young adults, middle aged, and geriatric), limitations and planned procedures. This position has been determined to have an occasional or very low risk of occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens. It is occasionally subject to irregular hours.

Essential Functions

Supports the Christian Mission and Philosophy of St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital (hereafter the hospital) and accomplishes the objectives of the Pastoral Care Department (hereafter the department).  Works within the established hospital/departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.  Applies a correct understanding and application of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).  Collaborates with the health care and pastoral team resolving issues.  Serves as a liaison among patient, family, and hospital staff during periods of crisis, seeking assistance as needed.  Routinely visits patients, providing appropriate pastoral presence and spiritual comfort.  Is sensitive to identify a patient's need for additional spiritual guidance/counsel.  Participates in assigned committees and patient conferences to enhance the continuity of care to patients.  Identifies a patient's need for additional spiritual guidance/counsel and reports this to the Director of the Department, patient's nurse.  Prays for and with patients, families or staff who so desire.  Meets with those who desire group prayer and/or may arrange for other appropriate clergy to be present as indicated.  Provides appropriate approved department devotional resources.  Assists in administering the sacraments: perform the religious rite of Baptism when needed or arrange for appropriate religious leader to do so, and serves as an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Eucharist, if commended by the Bishop.  Takes an active role, as assigned, in the department's pastoral prayer ministry.  Acknowledges the sacredness of each individual and is able to minister to persons of diverse cultures and religious backgrounds.  Completes required documentation in a timely manner.  Continues professional/theological growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature review, inservice meetings, and workshops.  Nurtures spiritual growth and development through prayer, retreats, and involvement in a faith community.  Handles potential or real problems in a mature, appropriate manner using the appropriate chain of command, e.g., responds to critical/emergency situations appropriately and in a timely manner. Responds to Code 99, PERT, 446, Code Adam, etc.  Communicates appropriately and effectively.   Participates in department and other indicated meetings on a regular basis.

Functional Demands

Prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting while on duty.  Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 10-15 pounds with or without assistance.  Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required.  Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast paced environment.  Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests.  Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. Maybe subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions need to be taken is essential.  Climate control an ambient temperature variances may be experienced. Exposure to limited amounts of hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes are a possibility.  Hours of duty may be irregular or unexpectedly extended due to emergency circumstances.  Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply.  Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.
